THE BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT SERVICE
Our experience with people facing the loss of someone special to them has taught us that learning to live without that person can be very arduous and painful. There may be many changes and adjustments to be made, many questions that remain unanswered and many practical and emotional difficulties that have to be faced. Katharine House Hospice therefore offers the support of volunteers who can visit at home and help with those questions, adjustments and difficulties.
Bereavement visitors are volunteers who come from various backgrounds and have a wide life experience. They are carefully selected, screened and trained by the staff before they undertake work with the Bereavement Service. They also receive regular supervision and ongoing training.
The Bereavement Support Service is available to anyone who has lost someone special to them through death whilst under the care of the Katharine House Hospice inpatient, day hospice, community (Macmillan) nurse service or our hospital support team.
We usually make contact with the bereaved person by telephone around 6-8 weeks after the death, although contact can be made sooner if this is appropriate. Some people prefer not to have support, but may decide months or even years later that they wish to make contact. We are pleased to respond to the need as it arises.
